What do Speech-Language Pathologists do?
Speech-Language Pathologists (SLPs) are professionals who are trained to assess and provide treatment for people who have difficulties with their Speech, Language, Voice, Fluency, or Swallowing abilities. These difficulties may be caused by a developmental delay or impairment, or it can be acquired due to an illness or medical condition or syndrome, an injury such as a brain injury from a vehicle collision, a stroke, or due to the normal process of aging.

SPEECH

Making the sounds we use to talk.

If the sounds of a person’s speech  are different than usual, or their pronunciation is difficult to understand, they would benefit from Speech Therapy services.

LANGUAGE

Understanding what someone says, and the words that we read, and using words to express ourselves in speech or text.

A person who has difficulty with understanding conversations or written text (stories, news articles, etc.), or using words to ask a question or give someone a message, would benefit from Speech Therapy services.

VOICE

The quality of the sound of a person’s voice.

A person who has a hoarse, strained, or raspy voice may benefit from Speech Therapy services.

FLUENCY

The smoothness of a person’s verbal speech.

 

If a person’s speech includes sound repetitions, word repetitions, prolonged sounds, sounds that they get stuck on, or speech that is “bumpy” in any way, they would benefit from the services of a Speech-Language Pathologist.

SWALLOWING

Moving food into the stomach.

 

A person who has trouble with chewing food sufficiently, or swallowing food or drinks without coughing or choking on them, would benefit from the services of a Speech-Language Pathologist.

SOCIAL COMMUNICATION

The way that a person uses language in social situations.

 

A person who has trouble with using language for different purposes, such as greeting people, sharing information, asking questions, requesting something, or adapting their speech to different situations, or using the “unspoken rules of conversation (taking turns in conversation, looking at the speaker, etc.) would benefit from the services of a Speech-Language Pathologist.

About Beverly

Beverly is a Speech-Language Pathologist who completed her undergraduate studies in Human Biology and Botany at the University of Toronto. She completed her Master of Arts Degree in Speech and Hearing Sciences at Macquarie University in Sydney, Australia. She is a Registered Member of the College of Audiologists and Speech-Language Pathologists of Ontario (CASLPO).

Beverly loves to work with people of all ages (children and adults), and has experience working with preschool and school-aged children who are developing their speech, language, voice, and fluency skills, as well as adults who are experiencing cognitive communication challenges due to Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) or stroke, and adults who are experiencing swallowing challenges due to aging or medical conditions. She has experience working with people who are diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder, Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, Down Syndrome, Dementia, and Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS).

Beverly provides Speech-Language Pathology services in English, Cantonese, and Mandarin.
